Blatt Lab for Autism Research

Our research team includes Dr. Blatt, a neuroanatomist with experience in cerebellar and limbic system research, Dr. Thomas Kemper, a neuropathologist and Dr. Margaret Bauman, a clinical neurologist, both world renowned and pioneers in the field of autism research. Currently we have three PhD students (Sandy Thevarkunnel, Adrian Oblak and Veronica Akle) and postdoctoral researcher (Dr. Jane Yip). We also have college interns every summer helping out with wet lab experiments.

Gene J. Blatt, PhD, Associate Professor
Dr. Blatt is the Director of all research projects in the laboratory. He has extensive experience in neuroanatomy of the primate brain. Through his previous work on the olivocerebellar projections and on the primate limbic system, he is able to investigate many brain regions in the autistic brain and approach autism research from a unique perspective.
Thomas L. Kemper, M.D., Professor
Dr. Kemper is a world reknown neuropathologist and has made major contributions in the fields of autism, Alzheimer's Disease, Down's Syndrome and normal aging of the primate brain. He is actively involved in research ideas and acts as a consultant on many projects.
Margaret Bauman, M.D.
Dr. Margaret Bauman is a clinical neurologist, internationally known as an expert in clinical aspects of autism. She and Dr. Kemper published seminal findings on the neuropathology of autism from the 1980s to present. She is the Director of the Ladders Clinic in Wellesley, MA. which diagnoses and oversees thousands of patients with developmental disorders.
Dr. Jane Yip, Research Associate
Dr. Yip joined the lab in the Spring, 2004 and has brought her expertise in immunocytochemistry and other techniques. She has previously performed research in pain pathways using in vivo pharmacological assays. Here at Boston University School of Medicine she is taking a lead role investigating the neurobiological basis of autism.
