The goal of this CID subcommittee is to explore ways in which to enhance mentoring
at all levels within our Department. We are particularly interested in fostering an environment for graduate
students in which they feel they have multiple sources for the support they need at each stage of their
development. As a first step we have arranged for each incoming graduate student to be paired with a
more senior student who will serve as a peer mentor. We are also discussing ways in which to involve
our alumni as mentors, and ways in which to promote mentoring among faculty and postdoctoral trainees.
We believe that mentoring is too critical to leave up to chance and we are seeking ways in which to be
creative and proactive at all levels within the Department. If you are interested in helping with this work,
please contact Dr. Todd Hoagland.
