Lela received a B.A. in Neurobiology and Behavior from Cornell University in 2001. As an undergraduate she worked in the laboratory of Dr. Christiane Linster studying olfactory stimulus processing in rats. She then went on to work at the Gene Therapy Core Facility at Weill Medical College of Cornell University in NYC with Drs. Ron Crystal, Neil Hackett, and Dolan Sondhi. This research focused on the development of a gene therapy for the treatment of Late-Infantile Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis using rodent and non-human primate animal models.
Lela is conducting her dissertation research in the Laboratory of Cognitive Neurobiology under Dr. Douglas Rosene. Her research examines the effects of aging on GABAergic interneurons in the primary visual cortex of the rhesus monkey.
Lela has been a Teaching Assistant for Dental Gross Anatomy, Medical Gross Anatomy, and Medical Neuroscience. She has also been an editor of the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology Newsletter.
