Dr. Hoagland earned his doctorate at the University of Notre Dame studying the neurohumoral aspects of the pathophysiology and treatment of hypertension. He joined the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology in 2001 and his research lab focuses on venous blood pressure control and fluid volume regulation, and how these factors contribute to hypertension. Dr. Hoagland's lab conducts experimental studies dissecting the role of various compounds on the sympathetic nervous system, the renin-angiotensin system, natriuretic peptides and endothelium-derived vasoactive substances, using methodologies ranging from whole animal fluid volume manipulations to specific receptor antagonists and inhibitors in animals. Techniques include cardiovascular surgery, radioisotope methodology, second messenger RIA and mathematical modeling.
Dr. Hoagland is the course director for Medical Gross Anatomy and he teaches in the summer and Dental Anatomy classes. Additionally, he runs the Journal Club for the department's graduate students. Dr. Hoagland has won several teaching awards during his career.
