ammermanNancy T. Ammerman, Professor of Sociology of Religion, School of Theology and Department of Sociology

Professor Ammerman has worked in conjunction with CURA and ISEC for nearly 15 years, having directed the “Congregations in Changing Communities” project, funded by the Lilly Endowment, in the early 1990s.  Since joining the Boston University faculty in 2003, she has completed a book on American congregational life, Pillars of Faith: American Congregations and their Partners (University of California Press, 2005) and has begun planning for a new project “Spiritual Narratives in Everyday Life,” which will examine the conditions under which ordinary people do (and don’t) speak of their lives in religious or spiritual terms.  A consultation on this project was held under the auspices of ISEC in 2003, and an edited volume from that consultation, Everyday Religion: Observing Modern Religious Lives, will be published by Oxford University Press later in 2006.
