Leadership

All BU-CTSI partners and affiliates are members of the BU-CTSI Strategic Executive Committee, which develops CTSI policy. The Committee ensures that the resources and needs of all CTSA institutions are considered during the decision-making process, leading to optimal collaboration in and contributions from the translational science network. It also ensures communication at the highest levels among our partners and affiliates.

CTSI has developed an organizational structure that creates a clear division of effort and lines of responsibility without building silos that impede communication and coordination. In addition, our lines of communication are bi-directional. Strategic goals and priorities come “down” from NCATS, the national CTSA network, our Strategic Executive Committee, and our BU CTSI Director. At the same time, ideas for program implementation and new initiatives are able to “flow up” from leaders, staff, and scholars.

BU CTSI leadership: David M. Center, MD

Associate Provost for Translational Clinical Research, BU CTSI
Chief of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine
Gordon and Ruth Snider Professor of Pulmonary Medicine
Professor of Medicine and Biochemistry

Dr. Center, who is also the chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine at BMC, has directed BU CTSI since its inception in 2008. An accomplished scientist, clinical and research administrator, and clinical and research educator, his experience and qualifications include 34 years of individual and program research grants from NIH, focusing on the immunology of lung disease; a wide breadth of research approaches including cell-, animal-, and human-bases studies; >150 manuscripts and 30 US patents. He is a former chair of both NIH and American Thoracic Society study sections and numerous national committees. As the PI of an NHLBI T32 training program, he has a deep commitment to multidisciplinary research and research training, including clinician-scientists. In the past two years he has been elected to the National Academy of Inventors, elected a Fellow of the AAAS, and awarded the Edward Livingston Trudeau medal of the American Thoracic Society, its highest honor for accomplishment in lung diseases and service to the society.

Dr. Center is assisted by two associate directors, Dr. David Felson, director of our Mentored Career Development and Workforce Development Programs, and Dr. George O’Connor, director of our Clinical Research Resources Programs Clinical Research.

Dr. Felson is professor of epidemiology and medicine and one of the world’s leading experts in osteoarthritis of the knee. He has over 450 publications and numerous patents on devices to decrease stress on the knee. He is the author of our K30 program in 1999 and has mentored over three dozen MD clinical scholars.

Dr. O’Connor is an internationally known clinical researcher in the field of chronic lung diseases of adults and children. He is one of BU/BMC’s most experienced investigators, with 22+ years of continuous NIH funding of both epidemiologic studies and randomized controlled trials, including heading the Framingham Heart Study Pulmonary epidemiology program.
