The SMART IRB Platform: A National Resource for IRB Review for Multisite Studies
Single IRB review of multisite research increased in frequency over a decade ago with the increasing popularity of statewide and regional consortia and disease- and population-specific networks. Although successful, the increasing number of agreements presented significant challenges and illuminated potential benefits of a single, nationwide agreement. Anticipated changes in federal regulations highlighted the need to systematize and simplify IRB reliance. To address these challenges, NCATS funded a project to establish a national IRB reliance network that would support national adoption of single IRB review.
Mayo Researcher Challenges Her Team to Develop Solution for DRC Health Crisis
In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) four women are raped every five minutes. This staggering rate of sexual violence has earned the DRC the reputation of the rape capital of the world. One of the many effects of this crisis is an increased rate of cervical cancer in the area, caused by HPV. To help increase access to HPV testing in the DRC, Mariana Walther-Antonio, Ph.D., and her team at Mayo Clinic have developed an easy-to-use, affordable home urine test that provides immediate positive or negative results for HPV detection. Dr. Walther-Antonio’s research is supported by Mayo’s KL2 mentored career development program and by a Mayo Clinic Discovery Translation Program grant.

The New York Times: Johnson & Johnson Ordered to Pay $572 Million in Landmark Opioid Trial
A judge in Oklahoma on Monday ruled that Johnson & Johnson had intentionally played down the dangers and oversold the benefits of opioids, ordering the company to pay the state $572 million in the first trial of a drug manufacturer for the destruction caused by prescription painkillers. Johnson & Johnson supplied 60 percent of the opiate ingredients that drug companies used for opioids like oxycodone, the state argued, and aggressively marketed opioids to doctors and patients as safe and effective.
Meet the Team
Carrie Dykes, Ph.D., is the Liaison for the Lifespan Enterprise Committee. She is Director of Research Services for the University of Rochester Clinical and Translational Science Institute (UR CTSI). She manages the UR CTSI Research Help Desk; a one-stop shop for UR investigators to get access to UR CTSI resources and services. She is also the point of contact at the UR CTSI for the Trial Innovation Network and manages the CTSA Recruitment and Retention Working Group. She manages the UR CTSI Recruitment Unit, which identifies best practices for recruiting into registries and clinical studies.
