Center For Space Physics

Seminar Series and Journal Club

WHAT'S NEW IN SPACE PHYSICS?

The Center for Space Physics coordinates and fosters research and training in Solar-Terrestrial Physics, Planetary Astronomy, and Space Engineering at Boston University. Through its weekly JOURNAL CLUB (Mondays, noon to 1 PM) and SEMINAR SERIES (Thursdays, 4-5 PM), graduate students, professional staff, and faculty meet to discuss current research topics. These include recent publications, latest meeting results, plans for future groundbased observing campaigns, spacebased satellite programs, and computer modeling efforts dedicated to understanding the upper atmospheric and space plasma components of solar system bodies. The Center offers an interdisciplinary approach to these topics via linkages to the Department of Astronomy (College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences) and to several departments in the College of Engineering.

JOURNAL CLUB activities offer student presentations and critiques of recent publications, as well as discussions of current national, international, and programmatic trends in the space sciences. The format is informal with a "bring-your-own-lunch" (with coffee and microwave provided) meetings each Monday of the academic year.

The Thursday SEMINAR SERIES features formal presentations of the latest research results by recognized experts in space science and engineering disciplines. Prior to each Seminar, there is an informal reception (3:30-4:00 PM) for students, staff, faculty and guests to interact with each other and to meet with the speaker.

Both the JOURNAL CLUB and the SEMINAR SERIES meet in Room 500 in the Center for Space Physics, located at 705-725 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02215. Off-campus visitors are provided free parking passes upon request.
