Do I have to be in CFA to join? |
You do not have to be in CFA to volunteer for Making Music. All BU students are eligible to become Making Music tutors. |
Do I need to know how to read music? |
No. Making Music is looking to expand to new schools, and we're alwáys trying to advertise music education and promote events for kids. If you are willing to help out in the office, and think that music education is important, we'd love to have you as a volunteer! |
Is teaching experience required? |
Experience is helpful but by no means required. We'll provide a training session to get you started off in the right direction. We will also touch base with you throughout the year to ensure that everything is going smoothly. We're all in this together! |

Do I get to pick my student? |
No, we match students to tutors based on instrument preference, skill level and how well we think personalities may match. This way everyone ends up getting the most out of our program. |
What if no student wants to play the instrument that I am able to teach? |
Making Music does its best to pair students and volunteers. If we are unable to place a volunteer as a music teacher, Making Music also offers opportunities for volunteers to get involved in the planning of our annual end-of-the-year recital. |
Can I participate for one semester only? |
No, volunteers need to commit to an entire year’s worth of volunteering when signing up for Making Music. The reason for this is because it can take quite some time and much patience to learn an instrument, so stability is especially important in this type of relationship. |
