Frequently Asked Questions

Question When is FYSOP?
Answer

FYSOP occurs the week before the start of the academic year. This year, FYSOP begins Monday, August 25 and runs through Friday, August 29, 2008.

Question How can I receive a FYSOP application?
Answer

FYSOP applications will be available for download starting June 1, 2008 on the CSC website or you may pick up an application while at University Orientation. Please note, applications are due Friday, August 1, 2008.

Question Is there a program fee?
Answer

Yes. The FYSOP program fee is $380. Please note that both half and full scholarships are available for students (please see application packet for more information on how to apply for a scholarship).

Question What does the program fee include?
Answer

The program fee includes all meals, housing fees, transportation to and from service sites, and materials during the week of FYSOP.

Question How are FYSOP volunteers selected?
Answer FYSOP volunteers are accepted on a rolling admission process according to the date applications are received in our office. Applications must be mailed or hand-delivered to the Community Service Center by Friday, August 1, 2008. WE DO NOT ACCEPT E-MAILED OR FAXED APPLICATIONS.

Question How are FYSOP volunteers assigned to an Issue Area?
Answer FYSOP volunteers rank their choice of Issue Areas on their application. However, from year-to-year, different Issue Areas are more popular than others and tend to fill quickly. If this occurs, volunteers will be placed in an Issue Area similar in nature to those they ranked as first or second choices.

Question Where do FYSOP volunteers live during the week of FYSOP?
Answer

FYSOP volunteers move directly into their permanent academic year housing assignment within Boston University residences.

Question When can FYSOP volunteers move in?
Answer

FYSOP volunteers move into their permanent housing on the Monday of FYSOP week AFTER 4pm.

Question What if I want to arrive early or late?
Answer

FYSOP volunteers may come to Boston early; however, they cannot move into permanent housing until the Monday of FYSOP week AFTER 4pm. In addition, due to the rigorous schedule of FYSOP, volunteers may NOT arrive later than Monday evening.

Question When do I find out if my application for FYSOP has been accepted?
Answer Volunteers are accepted on a rolling admissions basis. A registration committee meets weekly and students will know their status via U.S.
mail within two weeks of their application arrival. FYSOP participants will be notified of their specific issue area in August.
