The Community Service Center (CSC), originally called “The League”
was founded in the Fall of 1986 by a group of Boston University
students who wanted to create a structure through which they could
become actively engaged in addressing issues faced by the community
in which the University is located. Starting with four charter programs,
the CSC has grown to twelve, addressing the larger demand for volunteer
and philanthropic services in the Greater Boston Area and the greater
number of incoming students arriving at Boston University with
an already developed ethic of service.
Boston University has a model campus-based community service program.
Through the CSC, student volunteers are addressing issues of critical
concern such as the education of our youth, the AIDS pandemic, the
destruction of our environment, and the provision of food and shelter
for the poorest among us. Through the supervision, training, and support
of the Center, the energies of young people are focused to create
affordable housing, provide companionship to elders, and tutor recent
immigrants in English as a second language.
