On behalf of everyone at Boston University’s Department of Computer Science, we’d like to welcome our newest class to the doctoral program and our department!
For our new students – below you will find information about being a BU student, and some answers to general questions that many of you have asked us. Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to our Department Administrator, Christopher DeVits (email@example.com), our Director of Graduate Studies, Professor Margrit Betke (firstname.lastname@example.org).
The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences provides a wealth of information for incoming PhD students on their website – information for new graduate students.
Below we will try and compliment the information listed by the College. We look forward to seeing many of you for the Fall semester!
Department and College Orientations
The dates for orientation are set. The Department will hold our new PhD student orientation on Thursday August 30, from 9:30AM – 12:00PM. This orientation is mandatory. You must attend.
The Department orientation coincides with the required College orientation sessions. Details about the College orientation, including dates, are available at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences website.
Please note, there is an additional orientation for Teaching Fellows. Information about the Teaching Fellow orientations is available in the link above.
Degree Requirements and Class Registration
Information about the courses required for the degree program are available at our website. We will cover this material much more in depth during orientation.
We will also register many of you for courses at orientation, and some before orientation. If you have a particular faculty member you already know you’ll be working with, or think you would like to work with, please be in touch with them for course advising. You can also reach out to Professor Betke, Chris DeVits, or Jennifer Struebel (email@example.com) with any registration questions.
To see the courses offered by our department next Fall please visit the “StudentLink” and under university class schedule, search for courses in Fall 2018 under “college = CAS”; “department = CS”; and “course = 500”. This will bring up all CS courses listed at the 500-level. A second search done the following way will show you courses at the 600-level and higher – “college = GRS”; “department = CS”; and “course = 600”.
