SAMSHA LAUNCHES MULTIMEDIA MENTAL HEALTH EDUCATION EFFORT
The
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA)
on May 24, 2004, launched a three-year multimedia
public education effort aimed at increasing awareness of stigma
and discrimination associated with mental illness. The campaign, “Mental
Health: It’s Part of All Our Lives,” includes
broadcast
and print public service advertisements that seek to educate
the
public that mental illnesses are common, affecting almost every
family in America, and that recovery can be expected. The
educational materials feature people who have experienced mental
illnesses, and emphasize the key contributions that people
with mental illnesses make in our communities and our lives.

PHOTOVOICE CLASS OFFERED IN RECOVERY CENTER
This
summer, the Recovery Center is offering a pilot photovoice
class to students in the Recovery Center called "Picturing
My
Health." Photovoice is an innovative method in which people
can
identify, represent, and enhance their experiences with specific
photographic techniques. The purpose of this class, taught by
Alexandra Bowers, is to use photovoice to focus students'
attention on their health as a resource for recovery and to
explore the challenges many consumers face in attaining recovery.
Following the photovoice process, students are given disposable
cameras to represent their own "visions" of health.
Students'
work will be available for viewing in the photo gallery on the
Center's photovoice webpage at the end of the summer and
plans
are being made for a larger exhibition in the fall. For more
information access the following link:
