The
Center is offering a training package based on an audio
taped workshop held at Boston University and conducted by
Dr. Kim Mueser, PhD, Professor in the Department of Psychiatry
and Community and Family Medicine at Dartmouth Medical School.
The workshop entitled "Integrated Treatment of Dual Disorders:
Substance Use Disorder and Severe Mental Illness" focused
on increasing participants' understanding of the role of substance
abuse and rehabilitation strategies to help people living with
dual disorders. The training package includes 4 audiotapes, articles

(PDP) IN PSYCHIATRIC REHABILITATION

Self-Paced Study branch of the Professional Development
Program (PDP) now offers PDP Online Seminars comprised of short
topics in psychiatric rehabilitation including the adaptation
of presentations and workshops given by Center staff. The first
available Online Seminar "How to Give a Workshop" is
useful to
guide the preparation of your presentations for upcoming

UIC SELF-DETERMINATION WORKSHOP #4
"Let's
Get Creative! Using the Arts to Enhance Self-
Determination for People with sychiatric Disabilities."
The UIC National Research and Training Center will host this
exciting workshop as part of its National Self-Determination
Workshop Series. Nationally respected speakers, Gayle Bluebird
and Robert Lundin, will address how people with psychiatric
disabilities and their supporters use the arts to foster
individual and collective self-determination. The session will
include art making, improv, open mic, and writing exercises.
Experience in the arts is not necessary - all are welcome.
Session to be held in Chicago, Illinois, Friday, May 16, 2003.

SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION TO REVISE RULES
FOR EVALUATING MENTAL DISORDERS
The
Social Security Administration (SSA) is planning to update
and revise the rules used to evaluate mental disorders in both
adults and children who apply for Social Security Disability
Benefits or Supplemental Security Income payments based on
disability. However, before drafting any revisions, SSA is
asking interested people and organizations to send comments
and suggestions for revising the rules and for improving SSA
programs for people who have mental disorders, especially those
who would like to work full-time or part-time with support.
