Recovery Concepts

A study of the conceptual underpinnings of recovery: its barriers, facilitators and cultural applicability as it relates to people with long term mental illness

Overview

Despite the growing literature about the processes and outcomes of recovery for people with psychiatric disabilities there remains a lack of clarity about these constructs. There is a variety of empirical and anecdotal accounts of recovery in the literature, but few, if any, attempts at synthesis or meta-analysis of empirical data on this topic. The goal of this project is to bring these pieces of knowledge together to construct an informed, consensual model of recovery.

Data from past Center studies will be compiled and reanalyzed in the aggregate, and coupled with specific conceptual activities to further our understanding of the barriers and facilitators to recovery, including use of the direct perceptions of consumers themselves and their personal meaning of recovery.
