Using the Internet's Employment Resources

Classifieds the size of the Universe

Handshake

With all the Internet has to offer, it only seems natural that there are numerous resources to assist with a job hunt. From interviewing strategies to free resume postings, the Internet is invaluable for finding technology and non-technology related jobs. Here are some of the tools found on the net that we can use to find the perfect employment match:

  • Online classified

  • Online resume posting

  • Interviewing strategies

  • Countrywide and Worldwide postings

  • Specific company/organization research

  • Resume tips and advice

  • Job opportunities at specific companies— before they reach the classifieds

Online resources and advice

Many websites offer resources relevant to the job search and hiring process. Some have questionnaires and geared to identify your interests. Others have advice from "industry professionals." As discussed in the Introduction to the Internet, we are not completely certain if the authors and providers of advice are really industry leaders. If something doesn't make sense, seek another source. Don't follow any one piece of advice from one website, read from several sources and draw your own conclusions.

CareerBuilder.com

Have an employer in mind?

This strategy will be helpful if you:

know a specific employer you would like to work for, or

have an interview scheduled, and need to research an employer.

Most companies, both big and small, have web pages and web sites. The information contained on the web can vary: some companies can have thousands of web pages with bucketloads of information (i.e. Boston University). Other employers may only have a few pages with limited company information (i.e. National Empowerment Center). Both types of organization web sites can be helpful.

Often, employers will post jobs to their website and hire someone before ever posting to a newspaper. By doing this, they are more likely to attract an employee who knows about and understands the organization. For example, Boston University posts all new positions on their website and in the job room on Fridays. Only a few positions make it to the newspaper classifieds.

Knowledge about an organization exhibits preparedness, dedication and interest when interviewing. Researching an organization can let you know about the mission and strategies of the organization, the accomplishments and size of the organization, benefits and offers for employees, as well as other helpful information.

BU Office of Human Resources

The best way to find an employer is to use a search engine (see Intro to the Internet lesson on searching) or find a published web address on company letterhead/business cards. Below are some local examples:

Search the classifieds and post your resume

Many career websites allow you to search their online classifieds and post your resume for recruiters to view. There are an overwhelming number of website which perform these services. Each site differs in navigation and user-friendliness. Which one is the best? Users can make an argument for any number of these. The best career site is a decision for you to make.

Membership?

Like many other freebie-provider websites (click to review the lesson on Internet Freebies from Introduction to the Internet), many career sites offer special services in exchange for contact information and demographic information. Some of these services like site personalization and employment posting alerts can be quite helpful.

Here are a few sites for browsing:

Access to Nonprofit Jobs Clearinghouse
http://www.accessjobs.org

There are hundreds of job-related websites. You can reach more sites by using Internet directories like jobsearch.about.com or search engines like Google.com.

Many of the above sites use Web-based Forms to register, create and save personal information, and to search through job postings. A review of the Introduction to the Internet class "Webforms, give give give!" may be helpful.
