BU-BRIDGE
Clinical and Translational Science Institute

The Boston University Clinical and Translational Science (BU-BRIDGE) Institute integrates, connects, and expands research and programs across traditional academic departments and schools. The institute acts as a bridge between disciplines to facilitate interactions by incorporating multiple key programs that support the university-wide commitment to a home for translational research. An NIH-funded clinical and translational science award funds the Institute to build on existing strengths to create an environment linking faculty members, trainees and university programs. The ultimate goal is to speed the translation of innovations in medical science in order to improve maintenance of health and diagnosis and treatment of diseases and share these innovations with other University-based Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSAs). The BU-BRIDGE environment also supports the bi-directional development and translation of ideas that begin in the clinic to the BU scientific community and back to identify new ways to improve health and delivery of health care services. Moreover, the Institute significantly enhances existing partnerships with Boston's community health centers, transforming the conduct of clinical and translational research by infusing it with community-based perspectives and needs.

Introduction to the General Clinical Research Unit (GCRU)

The BUMC General Clinical Research Unit supports research services, specialized laboratories and a clinical research-training program for all BU staff including investigators in Medicine, Surgery, Psychiatry, Behavioral Sciences, Dentistry and Public Health.

The facility provides investigators in medicine and dentistry with the following: the ability to conduct pharmacokinetic studies in a controlled environment in both adult and pediatric inpatients and outpatients the resources for timed collection of specimens and repetitive tests (e.g. polysomnography, stress tests, bone density, etc.) the expertise to conduct esoteric laboratory testing a bioinformatics core with professionals to assist with statistical design, data management and analysis a private environment to explore patterns of behavior the location for education of future physicians, scientists and nutritionists in patient oriented research.

The Core Assay Laboratory is a part of the General Clinical Research Unit and is accessed through an application to the GCRU.

See General Clinical Research Unit  under Investigators. The assays performed are part of a clinical research protocol that is approved by the IRB and the Clinical Research Resources Advisory Committee (CRRAC).
