Standards Compliance

The Boston University Core Design adheres to standards published by World Wide Web Consortium and Core Design site templates are tested before launch. Both HTML (web) and CSS (style sheet) files are validated for compliance.

There is a lot more to building accessible web sites than creating alt tag options for images. NIS builds sites that are accessible to individuals with visual and physical impairments, complying with the US government's Section 508 Accessibility guidelines. Section 508 outlines web accessibility guidelines much the same as ADA (American's with Disabilities Act) outlines accessibility guidelines for physical spaces.

  • Pages degrade gracefully. For instance, text-based browsers can access all links. Those with javascript disabled can access all links. This degradation might require and extra navigation step or two but functionality remains.

  • Navigation and usability of Core Design sites are not dependent on colors (more web visitors are colorblind than any other disability).

  • Pages are browsable by keyboard (not requiring mouse clicks) for those visitors with physical limitations on pointing and clicking.

  • Pages are search-engine friendly — the Core Design does not use frames and uses unique page titles that are descriptive and succinct.
