SmartNav System

examples of the SmartNav SystemThe BU Core Design introduces version two of the SmartNav System. With SmartNav, web pages automatically detect the current page location and/or a keyword in the page title, and switch the link behavior in a navigation menu to indicate the "active" page.

For instance, the page you are reading uses SmartNav in two locations: the Primary Navigation Bar in the page banner detects the word "Menus" in the page title and automatically switches the graphic for Menus & Forms to display this as the active page; and the Content Navigation menu to the right detects the word "SmartNav" in the page title and automatically switches the style for the SmartNav System link to the active page style.

The SmartNav System can be used in either of these two ways, individually or combined on the same page.

For graphical navigation menus with three states (default state, mouseover state, and down/active state) the SmartNav System shows the down/active state for the current page, displays all other navigational menu links in the default state, and switches to a mouseover state when the cursor hovers over the linked graphic.

For style sheet (CSS-based) menus, the SmartNav System displays the down/active style for the current page, displays a default style for all other navigational menu links, and displays a mouseover style when the cursor hovers over the link.

SmartNav2 also introduces keyword mapping, allowing developers to map keywords with targets. This allows for easier and quicker implementation of the SmartNav System, especially on legacy web sites where file names and page titles were not originally created with the SmartNav System in place.
