The primary color scheme for the BU Core Design is red, white and gray.
Page backgrounds are always white. Some individual elements have attributes
that use various shades of gray.
Red: The official red for Boston University print publications is PMS 185
(using the Pantone Matching System). However, comparing colors in print with
colors on the web is a bit like the age-old apples and oranges comparison.
Direct equivalents are difficult if not impossible because print
publications use ink for color, while electronic display devices use
light for color. Since #D11600 (the closest match to PMS 185) does not appear in the web color palette of most graphic software applications, the BU Core Design uses the closest
common web color: #CC0000. The difference between the two
colors is nearly indistinguishable.
White and Gray: Page background for the BU Core Design is white. White backgrounds are specified
within the style sheet and do not require any specific settings within individual web pages. Body text, page outlines, mouseover behaviors in the content navigation menus, and assorted other components/elements use various shades of gray. Most of these specifications are determined by the style sheets. Those not determined by style sheets are pre-defined in the graphic source files.
Texture Fills: The Image Bar, BU Help Bar, and the background for content navigation menu headings all use colors with texture fills. The fill is a diagonal gray line on a white background. The fill is solid for both the Image Bar and BU Help Bar background regions. For the content navigation menu headings, the gray lines subtly fade out as the lines repeat from the left to the right.
