Saying Goodbye
by Susan Malouin, from her speech given by at the annual Core Banquet
I was privileged
to be in Dean Johnson's Social Science Honors section for the past
two semesters, and as I think of him now, one word comes to mind:
sweater-vests. I and all my classmates consider him a barometer
of class, correctness, and tact. He also plays a mean piano!
He is thoughtful and insightful, and even with hesitant discussers
such as myself, manages to draw out meaningful conversations and
ask the opinions and views of every student with his warm, accepting,
and inviting manner. Even when we get less than perfect comments
on papers it is impossible to feel even slightly indignant because
he is just so nice.
He goes out
of his way to schedule appointments and meetings, and his door is
always open—whether the door to his house for a home-cooked
meal, or the door to his office to talk about whatever is on your
mind, from classes to summer jobs.
I speak on
behalf of my classmates and, I am sure, all my fellow Core-mates
when I say that we will deeply miss Professor Johnson; our Tuesday
and Thursday afternoons will never be the same.
