The University's commitment to community improvement was recognized by the Allston-Brighton Community Development Corporation, which awarded one of its 1997 Pizzazz! awards to the University for developing pocket parks along Commonwealth Avenue. As a donation to Allston's Main Streets program, the University extensively renovated the landscape at Allston's Union Square Fire Station; the materials and services were valued at $9,000.

Student volunteers from the Thanksgiving Coalition pack and distribute food baskets to needy families in area neighborhoods.

The Boston University Band marches in community and holiday parades, and performs for events such as the Special Olympics, the Boston Police Runners Club, and the Boston Marathon's Finish Line. The annual Allston-Brighton Parade forms at the University's Babcock Street parking lot and features the University Band. The University's Army ROTC unit has provided a color guard for official City of Boston events such as the Veterans Day Parade.

Boston University distributes usable surplus furniture to a variety of area agencies and nonprofit organizations. Since 1991, more than 1,800 items have been donated.

Boston Can Share's annual canned food drive for area shelters is generously supported by major drives at the Boston Medical Center and the Charles River Campus.
