Urban
children who may be at risk for violence, gang activity, pregnancy,
and substance abuse benefit from the Afterschool Program,
a collaborative effort of the Community Service Center and the School
of Social Work. Eight programs, each run through a community center
or school, have a regular staff of teachers, managers, and volunteers,
and range in size from fifteen to more than 150 children. The Afterschool
Program provides tutoring, recreation, and mentoring at sites such
as Roxbury's Shelburne Recreational Center and the United South
End Settlements. In the 1998-99 school year, a total of 442 children
participated. More than two hundred undergraduates from Colleges
and Schools at the University volunteered in the 1999/2000 academic
year, devoting more than nine thousand hours.

Boston
University's School of Law runs several clinical programs designed
to provide pro bono legal services. The Civil Litigation Program,
begun in 1968, provides free legal services to low-income clients
in the Boston area, in civil cases such as domestic relations, housing,
and immigration. Second- and third-year law students represent clients
in cases provided by the Greater Boston Legal Services. School of
Law faculty, all practicing lawyers, closely supervise each case.
The
N. Neal Pike Institute on Law and Disability provides a variety
of services to people with disabilities. Attorneys and law students
work with professionals in the Aging Project at the Shriver Center,
serving elderly, mentally retarded people. The Pike Prize for Service
to People with Disabilities is awarded annually either to an individual
who has achieved notable success despite a disability, or to an
able-bodied individual or an organization that has greatly helped
individuals with disabilities.
The
Center for Law and Health Sciences provides legal consulting
services for advocates serving people with mental and physical disabilities,
conducts workshops and conferences, and places law students in internships.
