An
urban institution from its inception, Boston University enjoys
a symbiotic relationship with the Boston metropolitan area.
The University benefits from the city's resources and, in
turn, provides a range of educational, cultural, social, legal,
and medical services. The University also has a decisive impact
on this region as an employer, property owner, and economic
anchor.
 Boston
University's contributions to the City of Boston and the Commonwealth
as a whole reflect its mission as an institution of higher
learning. Many of the benefits to the community are the result
of academic programs, of innovative partnerships with outside
institutions, of established community service programs, or
of volunteer initiatives undertaken by faculty, staff, and
students.
In
addition, numerous educational, health, community, and recreational
services are funded either directly by the University or indirectly
through foundation contributions, research grants, and so
on. The following pages, which highlight merely a handful
of programs and activities, are intended to make the reader
aware of the fundamental role that community service plays
within the University and of the institution's engagement
with the world.
Boston
University's academic and administrative communities embrace
the University's commitment to serving the world that lies
beyond its walls. The University, recognizing the importance
of an informed citizenry, is dedicated to sharing its knowledge
and resources. Put simply, Boston University's strength as
an institution rests on its ability to function as a contributing
member of society.
