Community Update

Published: September 29th, 2010

In 1987, Boston University was the first institution in the City of Boston to create an Institutional Master Plan(IMP). In 2010, we applied for a two year extension of our third Institutional Master Plan. Over the course of twenty three years, the Institutional Master Plan process has helped guide the development of the Charles River Campus.

Working in partnership with the Boston University Community Task Force and the Boston Redevelopment Authority, Boston University asked the BRA and the Task Force to review and to extend their IMP. In the extension, BU offered an amendment to the IMP that would allow the building of a new East Campus Student Service Center at 100 Bay State Road.

The Boston University Community Task Force, that is made up of sixteen mayoral appointments representing the local neighborhoods surrounding the Charles River Campus, was an invaluable ally in this planning process.

On Wednesday July 28, 2010, the Community Task Force approved the extension of the IMP and also approved the amendment to allow the development of the East Campus Student Service Center at 100 Bay State Road. On Tuesday, September 21, 2010, the Boston Redevelopment Authority approved the extension, and the amendment. Further City approvals will be needed before construction on the East Campus Student Service Center can be built but the process is nearly complete. We are providing the complete documents of our IMP filings for public review.

The following are PDF’s for the: Boston University Institutional Master Plan (IMP) Amendment; the proposed IMP Overlay; and the DPIR for the Boston University East Campus Student Service Center as filed with the City of Boston.
