In
addition to its direct expenses, the University assists local businesses
that serve the campus population. These businesses provide jobs
for local residents and enhance the area's economic vitality.
Boston
University attracts top students from around the country and the
world. In FY 2004, out-of-state students comprised nearly 65 percent
of all enrolled students. Including graduates who remained for practical
training, 4,518 international students from 139 countries were enrolled.
In FY 2004, the University was ranked eighth in the nation in the
number of international students enrolled.
Many
students remain in the area after graduation. Approximately 13 percent
of out-of-state freshmen attending in the late 1990s still live
in Massachusetts and 5.9 percent live in the City of Boston, forming
part of a well-educated and skilled labor force.
Boston
University has ensured the presence of two major independent cultural
organizations in the metropolitan area. The University is a major
sponsor of the Huntington Theatre Company, a professional theater
company in residence at Boston University. The University owns and
operates WBUR-FM 90.9, an award-winning affiliate of National Public
Radio.
