A young neighbor takes advantage of the Coit Observatory's Astronomy Night, a free, public event held every Wednesday evening, weather permitting, at 705 Commonwealth Avenue.

Community members are welcome to enjoy the extensive resources of the Mugar Memorial Library, Boston University's main research library. Special collections at Mugar include correspondence and memorabilia from Martin Luther King Jr., Robert Frost, and Theodore Roosevelt. The public can also attend authors' readings and book signings offered by Barnes and Noble at Boston University.

The headquarters for the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra is located at the School of Music, which supplies free rehearsal and office space. The orchestra is comprised of talented twelve- to eighteen-year-old music students from the communities surrounding Boston University. These young musicians have performed in Europe and across the nation, at sites including Boston's Symphony Hall and the White House.

Founded by Boston University and members of neighboring communities, the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra (GBYSO) has been headquartered at Boston University since 1958. Two hundred fifty young musicians participate and perform in GBYSO.

The University is a major sponsor of the Huntington Theatre Company, a professional troupe in residence at the Boston University Theatre on Huntington Avenue. In addition to its six annual productions, the theatre company offers such community and education programs as the Student Matinee Series, the Young Critics Institute, the Humanities Forum at the Huntington Theatre, and the Huntington Speakers Bureau.

Residents of eastern Massachusetts, southern New Hampshire, and Rhode Island have come to rely upon Boston University's National Public Radio affiliates WBUR-FM 90.9/AM 1240 and WRNI-AM 1290 for quality news, entertainment, and educational programming.

Boston University supplies Boston Community Access television with the studio and newsroom space for Neighborhood Network News, Boston's only neighborhood news and information program. Since 1984, students in the University's College of Communication have assisted in producing the nightly program, assuming writing, videography, and control room duties.
