Steven Spielberg

Doctor of Humane Letters

Steven Spielberg, one of the most successful and influential filmmakers of all time, is a principal owner of DreamWorks Studios. Whether working as a director, producer, or executive producer, he has created films that have earned exceptional popular success and critical acclaim around the world.

Raised in New Jersey and Arizona, Mr. Spielberg began making amateur films while in his teens, and later studied film at California State University at Long Beach.

In 1969, his 22-minute short film Amblin’ was shown at the Atlanta Film Festival, leading to a long-term contract with Universal Studios, directing episodes of several television series and made-for-television movies.

He made his theatrical feature film directorial debut in 1974 with The Sugarland Express. His breakthrough hit, Jaws, was released in 1975.

Since then, Mr. Spielberg has written, directed, or produced an extraordinary range of films, including Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, and Saving Private Ryan, among many more. His films have earned numerous Academy Awards, and he has been nominated for the Oscar six times as Best Director, winning for Saving Private Ryan and Schindler’s List.

Mr. Spielberg won his first Directors Guild of America Award for his 1985 film The Color Purple. His 10 nominations from the Guild are the most received by any director, and in 2000 he received the Guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He has also won many Golden Globe nominations and awards.

In 1994, Mr. Spielberg used the profits from Schindler’s List to establish the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation, a nonprofit organization that archives filmed testimony of Holocaust survivors. He is also chairman emeritus of the Starlight Children’s Foundation, which supports seriously ill children and their families.
