Peter H. Vermilye

Peter H. Vermilye

Peter Vermilye was born in 1920 in New York, New York. He attended Groton School in Groton, Massachusetts, and graduated in 1936. He then earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Princeton University in 1940.

Mr. Vermilye began his career in 1940 at J. P. Morgan and Morgan Guaranty Trust. Ascending the ranks, he became Vice President for Pension Investments in 1950 and held that post for fifteen years. He served as Vice Chairman of State Street Research and Management from 1965 to 1969, and then as Chairman and President of Alliance Capital Management from 1970 to 1977. From 1977 to 1984, he was the Chief Investment Officer at Citicorp. For the next five years, he held the position of Chairman of Baring America Asset Management, Inc., and, from 1986 to 1995, he was Senior Advisor and Portfolio Manager of Baring Asset Management, Ltd. In 1986, he became the Strategic Advisor to the Kuwait Investment Authority, stepping down in 1990. Since 1996, Mr. Vermilye has been Senior Advisor and Portfolio Manager at Fortis Investments, formerly Harbor Capital Management.

Mr. Vermilye serves on the Board of Directors of Engelhard Hanovia, Inc. and Breadstreet Holdings, Inc. (a subsidiary of Kuwait Investment Authority), and, since 1969, on the Board of Trustees of Boston University. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Boston Economic Club. Mr. Vermilye formerly was a Trustee of Teachers College of Columbia University, a Director of the Cabot Corporation, and Chairman of the Investment Committee of Boston University’s Board of Trustees. His financial expertise helped to increase the endowment of the University from $28 million in the early 1970s to over $1 billion in 2006. Mr. Vermilye is Chairman Emeritus of The Huntington Theatre of Boston University. Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino declared May 30, 1996, “Peter Vermilye Day” in the City of Boston as the honoree stepped down after eight years of service as Chairman.

Mr. Vermilye and his wife, Lucy, have four children.
