Brice Marden

Brice Marden

Brice Marden was born in 1938 in Bronxville, New York. He attended Florida Southern College for one year, then transferred to Boston University’s School of Fine and Applied Arts and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1961. Mr. Marden earned a Master of Fine Arts in 1963 from the School of Art and Architecture at Yale University. He settled in New York City, and has studios in Greenwich Village, Tivoli in upstate New York, Eagles Mere in Pennsylvania, and Hydra, Greece.

Over the past half century, Mr. Marden has expressed his creativity primarily in painting and drawing. In Boston, he painted portraits and still lifes; during his graduate study, he abandoned representational work and created abstract art, organizing his paintings around rectangular formats and using a muted palette. In New York, he continued on this path, contributing to the Minimalist movement and experimenting with painting materials, using beeswax. He had his first solo show in 1964 at Swarthmore College, and then his first solo show in New York at the Bykert Gallery in 1966. In 1971, Mr. Marden visited Hydra, and a Greek influence became evident in the brighter colors, subject matter, and structure of his works for over two decades. He turned away from Minimalism in the 1980s, in part due to a trip to Thailand, Sri Lanka, and India. He developed an interest in Asian culture and particularly the art of calligraphy. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Mr. Marden combined Greek and Asian influences with the abstract painting of the New York School. Recently, the rural landscapes near Tivoli and Eagles Mere have helped shape his ever-evolving style.

Mr. Marden has had over 100 solo shows and even more group exhibitions in major museums and galleries throughout the world. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Mr. Marden is married to Helen Harrington Marden, also a painter, and has three children.
