 
As is Boston University’s tradition, the names of the Commencement Speaker and honored guests were announced on May 4 during the annual Senior Breakfast.
Dr. Steven Chu, director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, delivered the University's 134th Commencement address. Earlier in the day, Bill Kovach, noted journalist, editor, and author, gave the Baccalaureate address. Both received honorary degrees during the main commencement ceremony.
Others who received the University's honorary degrees are: celebrated American painter and University alumnus Brice Marden Brice Marden; Judy Norsigian, co-author of “Our Bodies, Ourselves;” Dr. Samuel O. Thier, former CEO of Partners HealthCare System, Inc.; and Peter Vermilye, senior advisor and portfolio manager at Fortis Investments and Boston University Trustee.
