In 2007, a group of students living on the same floor in the dorms at Emerson College in Boston, Mass.,
came together to plan and coordinate a new club sport on campus: Quidditch. Starting out with the dorm floor's small budget for events, the group of students bought cheap brooms and hoops in order to start playing Quidditch. The sport, which was adapted from the game played in
Harry Potter, is the newest craze to sweep across the nation's colleges.
Now, the small group of Emerson students has grown into four separate teams of 10 to 15 players each. The Falcons and The Boylston Berserkers are the best teams at Emerson; the Falcons having gone to the World Cup Quidditch Tournament in Middlebury, Vermont, earlier this year. The team placed fifth in the nation at the World Cup and first in Massachusetts (standings are kept by the Intercollegiate Quidditch League). All four of the Emerson teams play against different colleges in Massachusetts on the weekends. They are currently in the process of preparing to go to the next World Cup Tournament next year.
