Graduate school isn't cheap, but most of our students receive financial aid to help cover costs (visit the Registrar's Office's website at www.bu.edu/reg for information about tuition and fees). BU offers a number of options to qualified students, including federal loans, work-study programs, graduate assistantships and College of Communication graduate scholarships. www.fastWEB.com is a free website that offers a searchable database of over 275,000 private sector scholarships, fellowships, grants, and loans.There is also a site for Canadians at www.fastweb.com/canada.
The Dow Jones Newspaper Fund's publication The Journalist's Road to Success includes a journalism scholarship guide, available online at djnewspaperfund.dowjones.com/fund/publications.asp. This has been an invaluable resource for our students.
The Minority Online Information Service has a free searchable database for qualified minority applicants at www.molis.org.
www.students.gov is a clearinghouse of government financial aid sources for U.S. students. A great site.
Mach25 is a free, online database of scholarships created by CollegeNET for undergraduate and graduate students at www.collegenet.com/mach25/.
Editor & Publisher magazine publishes a Journalism Awards and Fellowships issue each year that lists journalism scholarship opportunities. You can download or order a copy of the most recent edition for $25 on the 'resources' page of www.editorandpublisher.com.
The Financial Aid Information Page, at www.finaid.org, provides free financial aid information from the author of The Prentice Hall Guide to Scholarships and Fellowships for Math and Science Students. The website is sponsored by the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators.
Students should also consult the nearest college financial aid office in their state of residence to inquire about the State’s grant program for graduate study.

The Boston University College of Communication-Gencorps Fellowship grants full tuition to a minority candidate. To apply, check the financial aid box on your application.
The Boston University Program in Science Journalism Harold G. Buchbinder Fellowship. To apply, check the financial aid box on your application.
The Council for the Advancement of Science Writing awards Rennie Taylor/Alton Blakeslee Fellowships of up to $2,000 to students entering graduate-level science writing programs. To download the application, visit www.casw.org/applicat.htm.
The Society of Professional Journalists provides grants and scholarships for graduate study. There are professional and student chapters located throughout the US (including one at BU). Although you need not be a member to apply for some of their grants and scholarships, you do need to be a member to access the fellowship information page at www.spj.org. Dues for students are $36.
The Sigma Delta Chi Foundation awards the Eugene C. Pulliam Editorial Writing Fellowship to an outstanding editorial writer to help broaden his or her journalistic horizons and knowledge of the world through travel or study. The award can be used to cover the cost of study at a university or college. Applicants must have three years of full-time editorial writing experience, and hold a full-time position as an editor. The National Institute for Labor Relations Research awards the $2,000 William B. Ruggles "Right to Work" Scholarship to a student who “exemplifies the dedication to principle and high journalistic standards of William B. Ruggles,” editor emeritus of the Dallas Morning News. The National Association of Black Journalists offers scholarships to African American students enrolled in an accredited program majoring in print or broadcast journalism. For more information, visit www.nabj.org/programs/scholarships/index.html.
The National Association of Hispanic Journalists offers scholarships to Latino students who have demonstrated an interest in a career in print, broadcast, or photojournalism. For applications and information, visit www.nahj.org/educationalprograms/nahjscholarships.shtml.
The Native American Journalists Association awards scholarships primarily to undergraduates, but welcomes applications from graduate students. New York Women in Communications, Inc. offers annual scholarships to men and women from NY, NJ, CT or PA who are majoring in a communications-related field. You can find the application and guidelines on the web at www.nywici.org/foundation/scholarships.html.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. offers the Julia Bumry Jones Scholarship to a graduating senior, undergraduate, or graduate student majoring in journalism or communications. The Guy P. Gannett Foundation Scholarship
provides full tuition and expenses to students from Maine pursuing careers in journalism. Recipients are chosen based on demonstrated interest in journalism, financial need and academic performance. Applicants must have graduated from a Maine high school or been home-schooled at home in Maine. The Greater Los Angeles Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists awards the $1000 Ken Inouye Scholarship to a Los Angeles, Ventura or Orange County resident attending journalism school. Business & Professional Women's Foundation created the Career Advancement Scholarship Program to award financial assistance to disadvantaged women who want to further their education. Scholarships are provided to women who wish to advance in their career, or will soon enter or re-enter the workforce. The Rose Biller Endowment Fund, administered by the Hebrew Free Loan Society on behalf of the United Jewish Appeal-Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of New York, provides tuition scholarships of up to $4,000 to Jewish students in need of financial aid.
