Print Journalism

The News-Editorial sequence emphasizes rigorous education in the historical, practical and ethical aspects of news, feature and magazine reporting and writing. Throughout the curriculum we emphasize ethics, integrity, accuracy and language facility. Students are required to master basic journalistic forms--most critically, the accurate, brief and clear news story--before moving on to the rich array of advanced courses, including foreign reporting, literary journalism, the essay and computer-assisted investigative reporting, to name just a few.

We emphasize intensive writing in our graduate and undergraduate Magazine Journalism sequences at Boston University. Faculty members help students develop professional-quality reporting, observing and writing skills. Each year, students win national writing competitions and many have articles published prior to graduation. The ability to think clearly and write well is a highly marketable skill. For students interested in creative non-fiction, there is every opportunity to tailor a program with emphasis on this specialty. The ability to tell a story which carries a strong narrative line will be at the heart of many journalistic endeavors, whether in print, online, in multimedia or in broadcast.
