MS in Photojournalism

Photojournalists entering this competitive field must be able to do more than merely take the picture and write the caption. The convergence of digital technology, delivery of information over the internet, and the evolution of traditional print media make it essential that photographers possess more skills than ever before. Students pursuing an MS degree in Photojournalism will be expected to complete a total of 8 courses designed to achieve three goals:

  1. Mastery of the basics of journalism and an under-standing of the history, principles, ethics, laws and practices of the profession;
  2. Expertise in the field of photojournalism, including mastery of technology required for success in the field;
  3. The ability to work in different media, which can include print, online, sound, and video.

Photojournalism students are required to become educated in the fundamentals of journalism, while achieving expertise in their field of concentration. Writing skills and journalism fundamentals are stressed in the core courses; advanced photo courses will include instruction in telling stories effectively through the visual media, editing and laying out photo stories, and developing a professional portfolio required for entry into the profession. Students are encouraged to take additional courses in other media in order to advance their marketability and skill sets.

Familiarity with additional journalistic formats increases your versatility and prepares you for a rapidly changing world involving many formats used to convey news and informed opinion.

Added courses may be chosen from the suggested list or from other offerings in the course catalog.
