Photojournalism Faculty

The photojournalism faculty includes professionals with extensive experience at the top ranks of the business. All instructors maintain strong, active connections with working photographers and news organizations, enabling us to bring the benefits of those relationships to students pursuing internships and beginning careers. Full-time and adjunct faculty members have ties to such organizations as the National Press Photographers Association, the Boston Press Photographers Association, the New England Newspaper Association, the American Society of Media Photographers, and the Poynter Institute.

Peter Southwick,
Program Director and Associate Professor of Journalism
BA, Harvard College. Professional experience: Director of Photography, The Boston Globe; staff photographer, The Associated Press and Boston Herald American. Two-time winner of National Headliner Award, and twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Awards from the National Press Photographers Association and Boston Press Photographers Association.

Peter Smith,
Associate Professor of Journalism
BS, Boston University. Professional experience: staff photographer, Lawrence Eagle Tribune; independent photography for corporate and editorial clients including Time, Newsweek, Paris Match. Numerous photo exhibitions and workshops.

BS Boston University. Professional experience: photography editor, The Boston Globe; deputy director of photography and staff photographer, The Detroit News; staff photographer, The Providence Journal. Twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.

Stella Johnson
Basic Photography
BA, San Francisco Art Institute; MS Boston University. Professional experience: Fulbright Scholar and Senior Specialist in Mexico; extensive documentary projects in the US, Africa, and Latin America; published work in Time, Fortune, and US News and World Report; NE Foundation for the Arts artist-in-residence.
