professor's book basis for PBS documentary
Professor
Doug Starr's award-winning book, "Blood: An
Epic History of Medicine and Commerce," is
the basis for the new PBS documentary series called
"Red Gold."
The
series had its premiere at Boston University on
June 19, where Starr, co-director of the Knight
Center for Science and Medicine, introduced Part
I and hosted a lively discussion afterward among
the outstanding journalists, physicians, researchers
and blood bank officials invited to the special
screening and reception.
The
four-part documentary was produced by Gino Del Guericio,
an adjunct professor in the science journalism graduate
program, and will be shown on almost every PBS station
throughout the country starting June 23.
"Red
Gold: The Epic Story of Blood" explores blood's
unique and integral role in world history, from
a substance viewed with suspicion or religious reverence
to its role as an essential factor in war and politics.
