About the Center

The Knight Center for Science and Medical Journalism at Boston University is dedicated to improving the quality of science and medical journalism worldwide by training students and veteran journalists to recognize, investigate, analyze and explain scientific and medical findings and issues.

The Center's interdisciplinary nature and special concentration in medical reporting encourage students and journalists from diverse disciplines to learn from each other as well as from the faculty. Graduates of the Center enter the profession with a strong grounding in research and journalistic and narrative techniques, serving a growing public need for specialized information.

"Greater Boston is a hub of medical, biotechnological, academic and journalistic expertise. The combination of Boston University’s medical school and journalism department makes it a natural spot for locating a new center that will help broaden our society’s understanding of medicine and medical research"

— Dr. W. Gerald Austen, chairman of the Knight Foundation Board of Trustees and former chief of surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital

The Knight Center for Science and Medical Journalism encompasses a diversity of programs aimed at both beginning and veteran journalists. The components include:

Graduate program in science journalism: Boston University's internationally-known Master's Degree Program in Science Journalism that prepares beginning journalists for careers in science, medical and public health reporting.

Visiting scholar program: a program that enables a distinguished mid-career journalist to take a year's leave from reporting to teach and conduct research on issues in science, medicine, and the environment.

On-campus training for mid-career professionals: short intensive training seminars for reporters who cover medicine and health.

Training for international journalists: a year's study at the Center for a mid-career foreign journalist specializing in environmental, medical and/or public health

Conferences on science and medical journalism: meetings that bring together leading editors and reporters with scientists, historians of science, physicians, policy makers and others who understand the practice and politics of science and medicine.

Global reference resource: (under construction) a library devoted to science and medical journalism, and a Web site in which journalists from around the world can exchange information, sources and perspectives on science, medical and public health issues.

The Center is jointly funded and supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Boston University College of Communication.
