The Department of Film and Television

Graduate programs in the Department of Film & Television aim to help each student find his or her calling. The Department's output represents the full scope of human interests. At any given moment, a student in our Film Studies program might be writing about Polish Cinema while another might be studying pre-Code Hollywood; a Television Production student might be producing a probing documentary while her friend in the Media Ventures program is researching a proposal for a new cable channel; a Screenwriting student might be writing a feature-length horror script while his black comedy is being made into a short by a Film Production student. Any survey of recent work from our various programs drives home the point: diversity defines us.

Learning to be a good writer stands at the center of the graduate journalism program at BU. Successful journalism requires developing skills in research, analysis, and clear and creative communication. The work may involve writing an account of a news event, telling a long and complicated story through the narrative techniques of scene and exposition, crafting a persuasive argument, or creating a compelling multi-media package for the Internet. These are skills that are broadly useful in an array of settings and careers.

Students who complete the program can work effectively in a variety of media, guided by a set of values that stress service to the public. Students learn about the profession by covering local, state, and national activities including political, business, and cultural events, issues and people.
