Helpful Hints

What to Do!

  • DO: Applications must be complete and received by February 1, or we cannot consider you for admission.
  • DO: The proper essay requirements for your intended major. An application is only considered complete if all the essays are submitted.
  • DO: Remember to submit official test and transcript records. Photocopies and faxes are unacceptable.
  • DO: Take your required test well in advance. We must have the official scores by February 1 for your application to be complete.
  • DO: Have your recommendations sealed and signed before they are sent in! We cannot accept email or faxed recommendations. It’s also a good idea to have back-up recommendation writers to insure that you get three.
  • DO: Label and title your essays to indicate which essay is which.
  • DO: Call us after you send in your application materials to insure that we have received them before our deadline.
  • DO: Check your email. We use email as our main source of contact throughout the application process, with frequent reminders as to what you are missing and reminders of approaching deadlines.

What NOT to do!

  • DON’T: Fill out the financial aid form. All graduate students are considered for financial aid so it is not necessary to fill it out.
  • DON’T: Combine the essays into one essay. All essay requirements must be submitted as separate essays.
  • DON’T: Send recommendations in unsigned or unsealed envelopes. These will not be considered.
  • DON’T: Wait until the last minute to get everything in. Only complete applications go to committee and all application materials must be at 640 Commonwealth Ave. ON OR BEFORE February 1. We do not accept applications "postmarked" by February 1. Any materials arriving at BU after February 1 will not be considered.

Remember that the application fee is a processing fee, not an application consideration fee and is non-refundable.
