Job Description

Boston University seeks a dynamic, innovative leader as Dean of the College of Communication. The new dean will guide the College as it faces the opportunities and the challenges of a rapidly changing media environment.

Located in the heart of an exciting, culturally stimulating city, Boston University College of Communication (COM), founded in 1947, offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in three major areas of study:

  1. Film and Television
  2. Journalism
  3. Mass Communications, Advertising, & Public Relations

Total enrollment at the College is 2350 students, its alumni number approximately 20,000, and its faculty of 168 is comprised of both scholars and industry professionals.

The new dean will provide overall strategic and operating leadership for the College. Working with the College’s faculty and staff, he/she will oversee the establishment of the College’s strategic direction, academic requirements, and curricular offerings. The new head of the College will also lead the recruiting and retaining of faculty.

As the College’s chief administrative officer, the dean will report directly to the Provost, and is charged with maintaining academic standards in teaching, research, and services performed by the faculty and staff and to conduct academic relations with other schools and colleges.

As the public voice of the College, the dean is expected to develop and maintain strong relationships with alumni and the professional community and be adept at soliciting and securing financial support for the work of the College.

Along with other deans from the University’s schools and colleges, COM’s leader serves as a member of the Council of Deans, chaired by Provost David Campbell, and is a member of President Bob Brown’s University Leadership Team.

Candidates, emanating either from the academy or from practice, must have demonstrated leadership skills and a track record of managerial success in complex environments. The individual should have a vision for higher education in the communications fields and be capable of providing unifying leadership for the College.

Candidates must be effective communicators able to attract and retain talented students, support faculty teaching and scholarly research, and manage in a diverse, collaborative, academic environment. Finally, candidates should be prepared to devote the next seven to ten years to this assignment.
