Frequently Asked Questions
Who is eligible?
To intern during the Fall or Spring semester you must be a BU Film & Television Major. Students must be a rising junior or higher with at least a 3.0 overall and in their major.
During the summer semester, all eligible BU Film & Television students may participate in the program. Students from other programs within BU and guest students from other universities are welcome to participate in the summer internship program with prior approval from the Director of Internships. Please contact Professor Cathy Perron at cperron@bu.edu. Apply early (January-March) as competitive internships fill up VERY quickly. You will need to submit a personal statement outlining what type of internship you are interested in, and all academic transcripts to Professor Perron for her approval. You must be at least a rising junior (32 earned academic credits) to participate in the internship program.
When should I begin planning?
The decision to do an internship should be made by the middle of the semester prior to the one during which you’ll register for the internship. You should start thinking about and researching companies where you’d like to intern.
What internships are available?
Your first step should be to research companies that have organized internship programs. The internship office and the COM Career Services database can get you started. Most networks and studios have internship programs with formal application procedures. Information is usually available online.
When should I apply?
Internship opportunities are posted year-round in the internship office. However, competitive internships, especially during the summer semester, follow stringent application deadlines. Please follow this calendar when applying to popular internships such as MTV Networks, Saturday Night Live, Conan O’Brien, The Daily Show, Comedy Central, etc. For fall internships, resumes are accepted during the late spring and early summer. For spring internships, resumes are accepted in late fall, and for summer internships, resumes are accepted in the winter and early spring. Some internships may want to conduct an interview with you as well.
How do I apply?
Follow the instructions listed in the internship posting. If they ask for a resume and cover letter then you should prepare a resume and cover letter and either email or fax it to them. In your cover letter you should indicate a choice of departments where you’d like to intern. If the listing states NO CALLS! it is in your best interest not to call them. Generally, most internships request that students email their resume and cover letter. For help preparing your resume and cover letter, visit COM Career Services.
How do I register for credit?
Students register for an internship by completing an add/drop form at the beginning of the semester in which the internship will be completed. The add/drop formed must be signed by the Director of Internships, Professor Cathy Perron. Internship credits must be registered for the semester in which you’re completing the internship. (The exception to this is that Film and Television Juniors with at least a 3.3 in their major and Seniors may overload with their summer internship credits in the following fall semester ONLY. Overloading students must have their internship confirmed and all necessary paperwork completed by EARLY MAY.)
Students are required to participate fully in the internship to earn academic credit. Students are expected to write a report midway through the internship and a paper at the conclusion of their internship. The Director of Internships will monitor your progress throughout the internship through contact with your supervisor. Your internship supervisor will also complete an evaluation of you. This is a Pass/Fail course.
How many credits do I register for?
The internship is available for two or four credits. You can choose to take two internships for two credits each or take one internship for four credits. COM allows a maximum of 4 internship credits unless students study abroad or attend the Los Angeles program. In those cases, an additional 4 internship credits are allowed. Undergraduates, who are rising sophomores or juniors, are encouraged to take a two-credit internship, leaving open the possibility of completing another internship later in their program. Graduate Students have a requirement of one four credit internship. The course prefixes for internship credit(s) are as follows. Two credit internship: FT 493; Four credit internship: FT 493 & 494. Grads: FT953 & 954. Registration for internship requires a completed Add/Drop form. You cannot telreg or webreg for an internship.
Note: You may NOT seek retroactive credit for prior work experience.

Is there a summer internship program?
Yes. The Summer Film/TV Internship Program allows registered students the opportunity to earn academic credit for an internship. During the fall and spring semesters, the course is restricted to BU Film & TV major students. During the summer, the class is opened to students throughout Boston University and beyond.
During the summer semester, all eligible BU Film & Television students may participate in the program. BU students outside of COM must check with their academic advisor to see how internship credits may be used in their program.
This program is designed to mimic the job application process. After approval, students should register for the summer course and then begin researching companies where they’d like to intern. This is done in the internship office and through on-line research. This research needs to be completed BEFORE the start of the summer program, and ideally should happen during January, February and March.
Students should also use this time to prepare a resume. Students should visit COM Career Services for a resume and/or cover letter consultation. This is highly recommended for students who are putting together a resume for the first time.
Students then apply directly to the companies of their choice, schedule interviews on their own, and decide which internship they will use.
Upon acceptance of an internship, students must complete the necessary paperwork with their internship supervisor, which then needs to be returned to the Director of Internships in room 304. Students should have their internships arranged and the internship paperwork completed by the end of the second week of classes.
Students are required to participate fully in the internship to earn academic credit. Students are expected to write a report at the conclusion of their internship. The Director of Internships will monitor your progress throughout the internship through contact with your supervisor. Your internship supervisor will also complete an evaluation of you.
