Writing Program
CO201: Introduction to Communication Writing
CO201 is the College of Communication’s core writing course. As students refresh their grammatical and stylistic skills, they apply those skills to professional writing assignments.
At the end of the course, students should be able to write with clarity, conciseness, precision and correctness, no matter what writing tasks or career goals are in the future. Students will also learn to use narrative, persuasive and analytical techniques, and to research stories through print and electronic sources.
201 Magazine
201 Magazine showcases some of the best writing from students in CO201, Introduction to Communication Writing.
The COM Writing Center
The College of Communication Writing Center (located in Room B27A) provides free assistance to students. The Center’s tutors advise students on all types of writing, but specialize in formats related to the COM schools: journalism; mass communication, advertising and public relations; and film and television.
The tutors are drawn from the finest writers in COM’s graduate school. Working one-on-one with the student, a tutor will address whatever issues concern the student, such as organization, logic, concision, clarity, style and grammar. A student can come in at any stage of the writing process — from brainstorming a topic to polishing a final draft.
The Center is open Monday through Friday, with walk-in hours available Monday through Thursday.
Jerome A. Nachman Writing Awards
The Jerome A. Nachman Writing Awards honor the legacy of distinguished journalist Jerry Nachman, and are presented annually to undergraduate and graduate winners of the College’s CO201 Writing Contest and The Comment Feature Writing and Creative Nonfiction Contests.
