Twenty-six BU journalism students covered the Boston Marathon using cell phones, flip cameras, still cameras to tweet and post videos to YouTube and Flickr.
Multimedia Journalism
Interested in learning more?
Interested in learning how to report news via Twitter? How about live blogging or streaming news coverage on the web? Journalism has changed, and we’re changing, too.
Boston University’s Department of Journalism is committed to ensuring that our graduates are armed with the latest skills, tools and knowledge to compete as the industry shifts toward using cutting-edge technologies to report the news.
We offer courses focused on producing compelling and engaging digital journalism. JO 540, an introductory multimedia journalism course, gives students an overview of the tools and techniques used to produce news online, including interactive graphics, video, audio and still photography. In JO 550, Advanced Online Journalism, students start with an idea and develop it into a full-blown multimedia web project.
Other courses in the department integrate multimedia into assignments. For instance, students in radio courses learn to produce audio slideshows, pairing sound and still photography. Our photojournalism students create web sites to showcase their work.
Ashley Lisenby (COM ’13) was one of the 20 students selected to cover the Online News Association’s 2011 conference at the Marriott Copley Plaza hotel.
