Journalism

Sports Reporting Requirements

A broadcast sports reporter requires writing skills, broadcasting techniques, a knowledge of production values, multimedia skills and, of course, and in-depth knowledge of sports, the players and the role of sports in society.

The goal of the MS concentration in sports broadcasting is to produce a skilled journalist who also has an in-depth knowledge of sports and sports issues, as they relate to the greater society and to the various sports themselves. Students must take a minimum of 12 courses (48 credits) to complete the program. Just as important, students should prepare themselves for alternate career patterns by taking at least one course in some other format such as magazine writing or multimedia publishing, and should also broaden their horizons with a substantive course not related to sports, as listed in “Topical Areas of Interest.”
