Edward J. Downes

Edward DownesAssociate Professor, Public Relations

Dr. Downes gained a wide breadth of full-time communications experience working in the corporate, government, and nonprofit sectors, more than 10 years, throughout metropolitan Washington, D.C. He held positions as a public relations director, marketing representative, special events producer, campaign organizer, personnel specialist, communications consultant, and researcher. Among his employers were the United States Congress, national trade associations, and large and small businesses headquartered in the nation’s capital. He holds a broad view of public relations education, promotes interdisciplinary scholarship, and has taught a variety of courses ranging from the theoretical to the practical.

He has presented over 25 peer-reviewed papers, recently addressing international conferences in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and India. He has published studies in a broad range of scholarly journals, among them the Journal of Human Subjectivity, Telematics and Informatics, Journalism & Mass Communication Educator, New Media and Society, the Journal of Mental Health Counseling, and the Journal of Public Relations Research, and has written chapters for the books Government Public Relations: A Reader and Corporate Communication: A Cross-Cultural Approach. He anticipates his first book, Press Secretary: The Story of Capitol Hill’s Image Makers, will be published this year.

He has addressed professional conferences sponsored by, among others, the Atlantic & Pacific Exchange Program, the Public Relations Society of America, the Publicity Club of New England Masters’ Institute, the Rhode Island Service Alliance, the National Service Corporation, the Massachusetts Lung Association, Boston Women Communicators, the United Way, and the National Association of Governors’ Councils on Physical Fitness and Sports.

Dr. Downes–who has served on graduate committees or overseen independent studies for more than 40 students–is a past recipient of the College of Communication’s Lyndon Baines Johnson Advisor or the Year.
