Loose Ends: Form, Documentary Media, and Online Environments What form do documentary media take when they “travel” online? And how do we recognize them as documentary in the first place? Terms such as i-docs, web docs, transmedia documentaries—all try to describe the mutations of the documentary tradition in the twenty-first century. But the behavior of documentary media in online environments can be more erratic than these terms may suggest, partly because of the mutual dependence between production and circulation. The projects often evoke the live quality of an ongoing event and challenge the conventions of documentary representation. This talk will explore some of these questions as it tackles the elusive nature of documentary media in online environments. It will focus specifically on the notion of documentary form, how we can reenvision it, and what role it can play when we try to distinguish documentary media from other forms of nonfiction online.
