Join Professor Eugenio Menegon (Director of BU’s Center for the Study of Asia) and Facilitators (Professor Mina Tsay-Vogel and Professor James E. Katz of the College of Communication) as they host a symposium featuring renowned international guest scholars. The objective of this meeting is to offer a cultural, yet technically informed reading of youth internet interactions in a global context. These interactions are usually treated as quantifiable and measurable phenomena, or analyzed for their contents, but with little consideration for the specific forms of sociability that the web encourages. This panel will explore how young generations interact on the internet globally, what forms of expression and interaction they are using and why, and whether these expressions and interactions are following global trends. Topics will also include conceptions of the self that are fostered by global internet interactions, the financial implications of the youth’s use of social media and social stratifications created within the digital world.
