As Guatemala was swept up in violent repression during the 1980s, Pamela Yates made a vivid documentary film there, "When the Mountains Tremble." A few years ago she was approached by Giuayemalan investigators seeking evidence against the dictator of that era, Rios Montt. Her new film, "Granito: How to Nail a Dictator," revisits both Guatemala and the Rios Montt story, but it is also about the craft of documentary film making and a kind of love letter to that craft. The director, Pamela Yates, who recently showed her film to a packed house at the Teatro Nacional in Guatemala, will attend the screening, discuss the film and her career, and answer questions. Her visit is especially timely because Rios Montt has just been indicted on war crimes charges. Anyone interested in documentary film should take this chance to meet a master of the craft.
