COM students have been working with MEDIAGIRLS, a non-profit organization in Brookline that creates and provides programming to teach girls how to work against the negative representations of women in the media.

Michelle Cove, founder of the organization, talks about how COM students have been instrumental in helping move MEDIAGIRLS programming forward. “Last fall we trained six BU students, all of whom have continued to volunteer with us, and this fall we trained 15 BU students, who will bring our program in teams of three to five sites” says Cove. The program also has a social media team comprised of COM students and a board where COM professor Garland Waller sits. Some past MEDIAGIRLS programming consisted of featuring COM student Julia Soklowski (COM ’18) youngest SURVIVOR contestant, leading a discussion on beauty and the media at the Brookline Teen Center.

COM students have also gotten the opportunity to not only give back, but also further the mission of MEDIAGIRLS. “Our main mission is to teach girls and young women to stand up for what they believe in using media to amplify their voices. And what we learned is that we’re not only able to significantly help girls with this, but we are also helping our BU students. They are getting practice in speaking up by modeling it, and they’re telling us that the experience truly transforms them” says Cove.
